The Science Behind Wellness — Research Highlights
At Somatic Lifestyles, we believe you deserve honest information. Wellness products are often marketed with big promises, so we've done something different: we've gathered the published research behind saunas, cold immersion, and red light therapy — and we're sharing the highlights straight, including what the science doesn't yet show. Our goal is to help you make an informed decision, not to oversell.

Traditional Saunas — Heat Therapy
Traditional sauna use has some of the most compelling long-term research in the wellness space.
- A landmark 20-year study. A Finnish study following 2,315 men for roughly two decades found that more frequent sauna bathing was associated with better cardiovascular outcomes — with the strongest associations among those using a sauna 4–7 times per week.1
- Heat and mood. In a 2016 randomized trial, a single session of whole-body heat therapy produced a significant reduction in symptoms of depression compared with a placebo — an active and growing area of research.2
- What researchers actually recommend. Studies point to about 3–4 sessions per week, 15+ minutes each for the associated benefits.3
In the interest of transparency: this cardiovascular research is observational — it shows an association, not proof that saunas cause these outcomes. Experts are also clear that a sauna is not a substitute for exercise, and that the popular idea of "sweating out toxins" is not supported by evidence.3
Infrared Saunas
Infrared saunas deliver heat at lower, more comfortable temperatures than traditional saunas.
- A comfortable path to heat therapy. Experts note infrared can be "much more comfortable while delivering the same sort of benefits" as traditional heat.4
- Areas being studied include relaxation and stress, muscle recovery, better sleep, and heart health — with early, promising findings.4
- A strong safety profile: reviewers report no harmful effects with normal infrared sauna use.5
In the interest of transparency: major medical centers describe much of the infrared-specific evidence as preliminary — some studies even used traditional saunas — and note that detoxification claims remain unproven ("still in its infancy").4 5 We position infrared as a comfortable relaxation and recovery practice, not a medical treatment.
Cold Plunge & Cold Immersion
Cold immersion is one of the fastest-growing wellness practices — and the research is genuinely interesting, if still developing.
- Stress and sleep. A 2025 systematic review (11 controlled trials, 3,177 adults) found cold-water immersion was associated with reduced stress (notably about 12 hours later) and improved sleep quality, along with a large workplace study showing fewer sick days.7
- A resilience practice. The most comprehensive review to date (104 studies) describes adaptive responses to cold — including effects on metabolism and cardiovascular risk markers in regular cold-water swimmers.9
- Adapt gradually. Cold triggers a natural "cold-shock" response (a spike in heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing). Regular, gradual exposure helps your body adapt and blunts that response over time — which is exactly why easing in matters.9
In the interest of transparency: researchers emphasize that many benefits are not yet proven to be caused by cold alone (cold-plungers tend to live healthy lifestyles overall), that cold immersion acutely raises inflammation right after (part of the "good stress" response), and that it is not a validated weight-loss method.7 9 Because of the cold-shock response, anyone with heart conditions, high blood pressure, diabetes, or circulation issues should talk to a doctor first.8 9
Red Light Therapy
Of everything we carry, red light therapy has some of the best-documented evidence for specific uses.
- Skin. Controlled studies show red and near-infrared light can stimulate collagen and improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and skin texture. In one trial, more than 90% of participants noticed improvement.10 15
- Hair. Dermatology sources report red/low-level light therapy can support hair regrowth in hereditary hair loss — one study found it as effective as a common topical treatment.10 12
- Acne & minor aches. Research supports uses for acne and shows promise for certain pain and inflammation conditions.11 13
- How it works. Red and near-infrared light is absorbed by your cells' mitochondria, supporting cellular energy (ATP) production — the basis for its effects on skin and tissue.15 16
In the interest of transparency: experts are candid that at-home devices are gentler than clinical ones, results require consistent use and are temporary (they fade when you stop), and several popular claims — weight loss, cancer, cellulite, depression, athletic performance, and sleep — are not scientifically supported.11 12 "FDA-cleared" refers to safety, not proven effectiveness. We keep our claims to the uses research actually backs.
Why we share the fine print
Good wellness starts with honest information. We'd rather you trust us with the full picture — the strong evidence, the promising early research, and the claims that don't hold up — than sell you a promise the science can't keep. That's the standard we hold ourselves to.
